Review of Smasher by Chase S.
Scott Bly takes us to see the future in Smasher. Smasher is a third person Sci-fi book that takes place in LAanges, 2042 not only is this the most futuristic place ever but the weirdest name ever, I mean try to pronounce it, I bet you got it wrong. Anyways the story begins in 1542, 500 years before the real setting takes place, A boy name Charles is running away from generic bullies. I say generic because after the first chapter they disappear from the story completely. I’m not joking they’re just there to be there. Where was I? Oh right. So the bullies catch up to him but then a girl shows up and falcon punches the bullies. This is Geneva (2nd main character) and she’s from the future because of course, she is. She’s here to find Charles and terminate hi- oh wait that’s terminator. Anyways she needs his help to save the future because an evil man is going to control the future. Also, remember how I said the setting right now is 1542 how is this kid suppose to help with a problem 500 years ahead of his time? Because he’s good at puzzles…….and he has powers too I think. Geneva takes him to the future. Foxx (The bad guy) has a virus that’s a mix between a computer and biological virus called The Future. “How can this work?” you may ask. Nanomachines (Not really but just pretend it is because this only reason I could think of.) I going to skip ahead a bit to the middle to keep this quick so the main characters find a dog in a cage who also has the same powers as Charles. Charles names it Callaya, I don’t really like the name so I’ll call it Maxwell. So anyway, Charlie, Geneva, and Maxwell are escaping the tower called The TerraThinc building and a robot gorilla named Gargan. They escape and this is label as a terrorist attack. Just imagine if there was camera footage of them on the news.
{Breaking News} Two 12-year-olds commit terrorist crime at TerraThinc building more at 7:00. Other news it’s been 20 years and we still don’t know who Spider-Man is.
Maxwell increases Charlie’s power level to The hum (Magic)
Charlie and Geneva decided to go back to steal the plans for the future. Long story short, It fails and Geneva is captured. Then, Charlie runs away and time travels to his time. That’s as far as I can go before going to spoiler territory. Overall it’s okay I feel like the bad guy should be more than a generic evil businessman but that’s all the major besides a few nick picks
The main character is Charles, a kid with magic powers and puzzle skills. The thing that makes Charles believable is that he doesn’t want to be involved with anything that’s going on. “But Chase, wouldn’t make that make the main character seem like a coward” you may ask, and well yeah it’s cowardly to not be any of this but would you follow a robot girl from the future who needs your help to save the future from a evil businessman who is trying to take over the world? No, you wouldn’t. Also, don’t say that you would because I have my lying detector on hand and I know you’re. Charles is both cowardly and caring, Cowardly because he doesn’t want to be part of saving the world and Caring because he saves the puppy and doesn’t leave it in the elevator when it’s about to drop. I can’t find any quotes about these traits but shows in his actions.
Charlie learns that you should never trust businessmen at all. The Theme/message of the story is that this when we let technology take control of us and everything else and when one person gets ahold of all the technology that everyone uses, he’ll control everyone and turn the government into a anarchy and the big idea is Charles trying to stop Foxx
Now if I told you this plot without telling you what book it is you probably tell me it’s some generic sci-fi book which I would agree. This book is not part of a series or has a TV or movie made about it, Scott Bly has probably made more books but you find them if you look up Scott Bly books.
I would recommend this to 13 – 15-year-olds who want to get into sci-fi and I would recommend this to any gender.
That is why I give Smasher
5 out of 7 Dragon balls
While not the best sci-fi book by far, it is an introduction to the world of sci-fi.
