Review of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Review of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before By:Shaylin S.

The title of my book is To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Jenny Han. The genre is Young Adult Fiction. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before takes place in Virginia, at the Covey household, Kavinsky household, The High school, and the Lacrosse field.

The book is in 1st person point of view. Lara Jean Covey tells her story. It’s only Lara Jean’s point of view.

The tone of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is sentimental. I think her tone is sentimental because she wrote a love story and wanted people to understand how her characters felt. Her tone is about sentimental feelings.

Lara Jean Covey, is in love with idea of love. Love stories, love movies, love songs, love letters. Lara Jean writes love letters. She writes love letters that are not meant to be sent. One day the letters go missing, and her old crushes have the letters.

The main conflict in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is Lara Jean’s letters go missing out of the hatbox her mother had giving her.

I honestly loved To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, it was such a cute love story. All the characters are extremely relatable, lovable, and caring. It’s every teenage girls dream love story. It’s my favorite book I’ve ever read.

Lara Jean Covey, is a 16 year old girl. Who loves to read about love. She’s in love with the idea of love. What makes Lara Jean so relatable is that she’s super awkward and she’s quirky.

Some of Lara Jean’s character traits are Quirky, awkward. I think she’s quirky because she loves love. She’s also very awkward because she freezes up when she talks to boys. “ You were never second best” This quote is from Peter Kavinsky. He’s telling Lara that she was never his second choice. “ You’d rather make up some fantasy version of someone, than be with a real person.” THis quote is also from Peter Kavinsky. He’s telling Lara that she’s stuck in a daze\ fantasy world and is scared to be with a real person.

Lara Jean learns that it’s okay to love a real life person and not always have her nose in a love story, and not to worry about everyone else. The big idea in this story is love. Lara Jean realizes it’s not always about fantasy love stories. She realizes that it’s normal for her to have feelings for a boy that’s not in a book.

The theme is that love conquers all. Lara is so in love with the idea of love she drags herself into the fantasy world of reading love stories.

Yes this book is part of a series. The second book is P.S I Love You and the third book is Always and forever, Lara Jean. This is also a movie, it’s on Netflix. Jenny Han has written other books like The Summer I Turned Pretty series. There are other books in the genre but not like To All The Boys’ I’ve Loved Before. I recommend this book to 13-18 year olds. Mostly girls would like this book because girls prefer romance stories. If you love romance, love, love letters, drama and tears you’ll love this book. I would rate this book/series 5 out of 5. This is my favorite book and I love re reading this whole series and watching the movie.

Review of Smasher

Review of Smasher by Chase S.

Scott Bly takes us to see the future in Smasher. Smasher is a third person Sci-fi book that takes place in LAanges, 2042 not only is this the most futuristic place ever but the weirdest name ever, I mean try to pronounce it, I bet you got it wrong. Anyways the story begins in 1542, 500 years before the real setting takes place, A boy name Charles is running away from generic bullies. I say generic because after the first chapter they disappear from the story completely. I’m not joking they’re just there to be there. Where was I? Oh right. So the bullies catch up to him but then a girl shows up and falcon punches the bullies. This is Geneva (2nd main character) and she’s from the future because of course, she is. She’s here to find Charles and terminate hi- oh wait that’s terminator. Anyways she needs his help to save the future because an evil man is going to control the future. Also, remember how I said the setting right now is 1542 how is this kid suppose to help with a problem 500 years ahead of his time? Because he’s good at puzzles…….and he has powers too I think. Geneva takes him to the future. Foxx (The bad guy) has a virus that’s a mix between a computer and biological virus called The Future. “How can this work?” you may ask. Nanomachines (Not really but just pretend it is because this only reason I could think of.) I going to skip ahead a bit to the middle to keep this quick so the main characters find a dog in a cage who also has the same powers as Charles. Charles names it Callaya, I don’t really like the name so I’ll call it Maxwell. So anyway, Charlie, Geneva, and Maxwell are escaping the tower called The TerraThinc building and a robot gorilla named Gargan. They escape and this is label as a terrorist attack. Just imagine if there was camera footage of them on the news.

{Breaking News} Two 12-year-olds commit terrorist crime at TerraThinc building more at 7:00. Other news it’s been 20 years and we still don’t know who Spider-Man is.

Maxwell increases Charlie’s power level to The hum (Magic)

Charlie and Geneva decided to go back to steal the plans for the future. Long story short, It fails and Geneva is captured. Then, Charlie runs away and time travels to his time. That’s as far as I can go before going to spoiler territory. Overall it’s okay I feel like the bad guy should be more than a generic evil businessman but that’s all the major besides a few nick picks

The main character is Charles, a kid with magic powers and puzzle skills. The thing that makes Charles believable is that he doesn’t want to be involved with anything that’s going on. “But Chase, wouldn’t make that make the main character seem like a coward” you may ask, and well yeah it’s cowardly to not be any of this but would you follow a robot girl from the future who needs your help to save the future from a evil businessman who is trying to take over the world? No, you wouldn’t. Also, don’t say that you would because I have my lying detector on hand and I know you’re. Charles is both cowardly and caring, Cowardly because he doesn’t want to be part of saving the world and Caring because he saves the puppy and doesn’t leave it in the elevator when it’s about to drop. I can’t find any quotes about these traits but shows in his actions.

Charlie learns that you should never trust businessmen at all. The Theme/message of the story is that this when we let technology take control of us and everything else and when one person gets ahold of all the technology that everyone uses, he’ll control everyone and turn the government into a anarchy and the big idea is Charles trying to stop Foxx

Now if I told you this plot without telling you what book it is you probably tell me it’s some generic sci-fi book which I would agree. This book is not part of a series or has a TV or movie made about it, Scott Bly has probably made more books but you find them if you look up Scott Bly books.

I would recommend this to 13 – 15-year-olds who want to get into sci-fi and I would recommend this to any gender.

That is why I give Smasher

5 out of 7 Dragon balls

While not the best sci-fi book by far, it is an introduction to the world of sci-fi.

May B. Book Review

Review: May B.
America S.

Caroline Starr Rose sets her realistic fiction novel at a White House, Kansa Prairie, around the 1800’s. This novel is written in 1st person point of view because the main character May B is telling the story. Caroline Starr writes May B in a confused, impatient tone. This book is mainly about May B, a girl who has to homestead a strangers house. Basically is 15 miles away and until Christmas because her family needs money. In between the time the married couple has arguments that makes one leave and the other look for her. This makes her very independent thinking about what she has to do to survive the time of the cold season. The cold season is how she must prepare to be on her own at Mr. and Mrs. Oblinger’s house. The middle is how she goes and after issues with the couple, they abandon her. The ending is about how she is running out of food and cold is using up her fuel. Only thing is that she decides to walk home in the snow, but she finds someone who will help her. The main conflict is at 12 she’s all one with no one there to have a watch on her. I didn’t like it because I can connect in a way with the situation.

May B is actually Mavis Elizabeth Betterly. She’s a strong, overcoming girl but can feel very lonely and worthless because of her disability to learn. What makes her believable is how she describes her feelings during the time she’s sent off. Its Intriguing and gets me thinking. Its relatable in a way because I’ve dealt with that. May B is scared and brave. On page 3 it says, “Ma and Pa want me to leave and live with strangers. I won’t go.” This shows she scared because her going to someone’s house she doesn’t know and having to stay with them would get her worried. It also says on page 10,” Ma told you? Pa asks straight after grace. “Better pack tonight.” I nod, stare down at the chicken fixings.” This shows she’s brave because after trying to tell them she doesn’t want to go, she realized she must for her family to earn money. She learns to put family first. The big idea is to be prepared to be alone. The theme is the danger of isolation but the lesson, in general, is to be ready to do things yourself.
Other connections I can make to this is that she did this for her Ma and Pa. May B is not part of a series, the book doesn’t have a movie but the author Caroline Starr Rose has written 8 more books. The books are not the same genre. I would recommend this book to my friends. In 8th grade and are around 12 or 13 because they could also understand the situation. I would rate this book on a scale of 1-10 a 7. I would say 3.5 stars because it was interesting but didn’t make me want to keep reading, page after page.

BOOK REVIEW

          all we have is now

Reviewed by Emily K.

The novel I read, all we have is now, is a suspenseful fiction story. The author is Lisa Schroeder, and the story takes place in Portland, Oregon. This story is in a third person point of view and the main characters are friendly. To summarize the story, Vince and Emerson are both homeless teenagers. They learn that an asteroid is coming to where they live and they can’t do anything about it. They are about to give up everything until they meet a man named Carl who influences them to help other people who may need it. This is a great novel if you love suspense.

The characters are very relatable because they help other people. On page 259, Carl says “I’m curious,” “After you left the bridge, what did you do? Did you find any people to help, like we talked about?” Emerson says “Yeah. We did. We helped a kid become a rock star. And we took a woman to a place very much like Paris. And we took two girls to the Enchanted Forest earlier today.”

Emerson and Vince learn that by helping others, they make themselves and others feel good making them realize that the time you spend on Earth is limited so you should make the best of everything.

The characters are friendly and outgoing. The author has written many other books for the 8-12 age group and 13 and up teenage group. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars since it is the best book I have read so far!

Book Review

Review of Generation Next

By Alex S.

Oli White sets his present-day realistic fiction novel, Generation Next in the United Kingdom in a college. This novel is written in first person point of view because the main character Jack is sharing his experiences. Oli white sets the tone of lively while the main character Jack is excited for the biggest thing in his life. At the beginning of the book, Jack talks about how he was bullied at his old school for being a geek and then moved to a new school, hoping he could not be a geek and make new friends. In the middle of the book, Jack starts going to his friends’ house and meets a small group who he becomes friends, and later business partners with because they came up with the next greatest social media platform called Generation next or (GenNext). The platform starts blowing with thousands of followers every night up and many famous people want to be interviewed by them, but people also want to sabotage the teens and make them lose their fame and their company. The end of the story Jack and his friends find out who is has ruined their business and come up with a plan to stop them before they ruin Jack’s entire life including his family, friends, and the girl he is falling for. I really enjoyed the book because it was very relatable and encourages people to follow their dreams before that chance is gone and that anything can happen if you try hard enough.

The main character is Jack the average teenager who enjoys video games and is a geek, who recently moved to a new college due to being bullied. Some of his main character traits are geeky, shy, straightforward, creative, smart, and talented. What makes Jack relateable is that he is a teenager who just wants to fit in like everyone else. One quote on page 58 by Jack is “it would be like pulling together things we love about YouTube, Buzzfeed, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram but it would be mainly on music and sports.” He is talking about the idea of creating a social media platform and how it would work and what it would look like. Another quote on page 185 by Austin “Do you know Harriet Rushworth, the one who has sold over a hundred billion records?” “ They want us to interview her and try to promote her in the UK through GenNext, instead of just forcing some cheesy marketing campaign down everyone’s throats…” Austin one of Jack’s friends and head business partners of GenNext just got a phone call about how CTA (creative talent agency) on how they want to have them interview a famous pop star in LA. The theme of this book is to never miss your chance because it may only come once and you must take it when you have it. The big idea of this book is to follow your dreams and anything is possible if you work hard enough and put a lot of effort into what you are doing if you want to succeed, and don’t let anyone bring you down. The protagonist (Jack) learns that not everyone wants to be friends and people will get jealous and try to make you fail if you are succeeding. So you have to be very careful with what you do so you can succeed. In the book, Jack and his friends have many chances where they mess up and people frame them, so they have to fix their mistakes.

This book is the first book out of two by Oil White. The book is fairly new being released in 2016 by a famous YouTuber. The other book in the series is called The Takeover. I really want the next book in this collection because I enjoyed reading the first novel, and if the Takeover is just like this book I will surely love it. I would recommend this book to teenagers who enjoy social media, creativity, and the average little bit of school drama. On a scale of one to ten social media likes, I would rate this book 9/10 likes because you can really relate to the characters in the book and what they are going through, and how much of a challenge it is to make a business successful. Some of the other books that I enjoyed reading with this genre are Michael Vey, by Richard Paul Evans. Michael Vey is part a 7 book series, which all the books are action-packed full of adventures and action. Overall I think you should read Generation Next because it’s a really fun and cool book for teenagers to read with many plot twists that you don’t even see coming.

Down A Dark Hall Review

Down A Dark Hall by Madison H.

In Lois Duncan’s realistic fiction book “Down A Dark Hall” is taken place in a boarding school in Blackwood village. The book is written in a first-person point of view because the main character is telling the story. The tone of the book is exciting because you don’t know what’s gonna happen next. The book starts with Kit Gordy going to a boarding school her parents are going on a honeymoon and she didn’t have a good feeling in the beginning and then throughout the time being there she has she has been having a lot of irregular things happen to her, she feels like there’s something more than what Madame Duret is telling her. I thought the book was good bc it put me on the edge of my seat and you never knew what was gonna happen next.

Kit Gordy is a very likable person because she is a kind and very trustworthy person and she is very caring about her friends at her boarding school because there are not many girls there and she likes to ask her friends how they’re doing every day. In my book, the main character learned that she should be nice to everyone because you might need help from them along the way, The main idea of my book is that it wants to know what is so creepy about the Blackwood boarding school. My theme is doing what you want to do, not what someone else tells you to.

This book is also a movie and some other books by Lois Duncan that have the same genre is “Summer Of Fear”, “Killing Mr. Griffin” and “Don’t Look Behind You”. I would recommend this book to boys and girl between the ages of 11+ if you are interested in scary books. I give this book 9/10 stars because it was overall a pretty good book but the book was a little boring at some parts and it took them a long time to explain stuff but I did like the suspense of the book.

Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway

Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway is a realistic fiction set with a kid and his family taking on and eventful vacation. In the story Greg Heffley’s 1st person view is documented in his diary. His parents decide it was time for a break. They take on a vacation to where they had their honeymoon, in Isla de Corales. During the middle of the book is where he starts to experience events that don’t usually go in his favor. Towards the end of the book he begins to realize the reason for this trip and what he gets out of it. I like this book because it is extremely funny and exciting book. The only thing I did not like about this book is as the book goes along it becomes predictable.

The protagonist (main character) in my story is an interesting boy adolescent boy named Greg Heffley. He is an interesting person because he can never really get on the right end of things. I know this because in the story a couple gets on his plane last second to sit with him on page 40 he says “I couldn’t believe my luck. As soon as we took off I was gonna stretch out across all three seats and get myself a good night’s sleep. But right before the doors closed one more couple got on board, and they had a baby with them.” Also Greg Heffley is a very relatable person to me also being an adolescent boy making mistakes. Lastly, Greg Heffley is a somewhat frightened person i know this because on page 104 Greg Heffley says “This was no ordinary spider though. That this was as big as my hand, When it fell to the floor I climbed up on the sink so I wasn’t on the same level as it. He learns in the end though that not everything is as bad as you think it is going to be. I think this is the theme because on page 204 he says “After the day was over we went down to the beach, and actually we had a lot of fun.”

I would connect this too another book of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck. I would connect these too because in both books, even all of this series. Greg Heffley just never gets anything to go his way. I would recommend this to Male adolescents because Greg Heffley is also a young boy who makes mistakes and trying to find his place in this world just like many others including me on a scale of 1~10 I would rate this book a 8/10 because it is very funny and extremely relatable if you yourself are a young boy like Greg Heffley. I did not give this book a full 10/10 because it becomes more easier to predict the novel the more you read through it. In conclusion Diary of a Wimpy: The Getaway by Jeff Kinney is a great book and I definitely enjoyed it and would heavily recommend it to anyone wanting to enjoy a good book and laugh a little while doing so.

Percy Jackson Review

By Anthony C.

Review of Percy Jackson Sea Of Monsters by Rick Riordan. The story is a fictional fantasy placed in a modern-day setting. It’s a first-person story told by the main character Percy. It’s a very light-hearted fun story because of the way the characters are and how the story is written. The story is about a boy named Percy that has to go on a journey to save camp half-blood with his half-brother cyclops and his friend Annabeth. I really liked the book because of how interested I was with reading it. The main character is Percy is an interesting character because he is a demigod which comes with pros and cons making him an interesting character. Also, he is a bold and collective character. I know this because he says “I balled my fists. I hope my face wasn’t turning red as it felt.” This shows he’s not afraid to stand up for himself and his friends. Also, it says”No I promised, gritting my teeth. Matt Sloan is the Freak.” Also giving more evidence that he’s not afraid to stick up for his friend. The main idea is to have faith and never give up. The book is part of a series and was put into movie form. I would recommend this to teens and I give it a 7 out of 10 gods because of its good coming of age and a good decision-making story.

Book Review

Jake S.

Jeff Kinney sets his present-day realistic fiction book diary of a wimpy kid Hard Luck a book based in the united states. Greg Heffley tells the story from a first-person point of view. Jeff Kinney writes Hard Luck in a very direct mood. In the book, it shows how easily friends can leave you. Also having friends is very helpful. At the beginning of the book Rowley ditches Greg for his new girlfriend. In the middle of the book, Greg is having a hard time with school. He also is having Hard luck without Rowley because he would always carry Greg’s books. At the end of the book, Rowley’s girlfriend breaks up with him. Then Greg and Rowley go back to normal. I really like the book.

Greg Heffley is the main character. Greg is a very wimpy/ lonely kid. Greg is a likable kid because he is a pretty nice and funny kid. Greg is lonely because he only really one friend. Greg is also wimpy because he can not even carry all of his books home from school. He said “my body is just not built to carry that weight.” so he uses a roller bag now cause he does not have Rowley to carry his books. Also, this supports the trait of him being lonely Greg’s mom always says “family is forever friends are not.” pg#1. Greg does not have all lot of really close friends and he always feels sad because he lost Rowley to some girl. But Greg’s mom knew how sad he was and told him. “No matter how nice you treat some people, they will turn there back on you the second they get the chance.” Pg#88. After Greg’s mom said that he learned to be grateful for what you have. He also learned you should try to have more than one friend. So if one friend ditches you  have another friend to hang out with. The Theme of the book is Greg is having some really hard luck with school and friends. My second understanding of the theme is that no matter how hard life is at that time treat everybody nice and things will get better for you.

I can make a connection with my life last year was pretty difficult when my grades dropped and I was having a hard time getting them back up. But I learned that you just have to keep trying your best. When you try your best good things come out of it. Like beating the school record for the cross country!! The book Diary of a wimpy kid Hard Luck is part of a big 10 book series. This series is a new york times best seller. The author Jeff Kinney has other huge hit series are to that are similar to this series. I would recommend this book to boys ages 8-13. I would rate this book 5 stars. The book really grabs your attention and pulls you in.

Evan V. Book Review

Let me just say this, I loved Jeff Kinney’s Diary Of A Wimpy Kid! Realistic Fiction books are my favorite because they are super relatable. I think Greg Heffley’s Humorous First Person Novel was definitely enjoyable because of how it reminds me of middle school. Have you ever tried to just get through the school year and be popular at the same time? Well, the reason Greg wrote in his novel is to show you his attempt of exactly that.

Greg Heffley had a friend that he thought was pulling him down and ruining his chances of becoming popular. His name was Rowley Jefferson. They both try their best to get done with the year without any problems but It goes the complete another way. Rowley tried to be funny a lot but sometimes it didn’t work… well, most times. But he made many people laugh just from a few simple words. “Zoo-Wee Mama.” All he said was that and somehow it made him more popular than Greg. Greg didn’t like it and he thinks “I’ll be famous one day but for now I’m stuck with a bunch of morons.” After denying friendships with Rowley, Greg realized that they had to stick together no matter what happens.

I would also like to say that this is a great book for boys from 9 to 14 but anyone can enjoy it. If you liked the first one you can read the other ones in the series. On a scale of one to ten, I rate it an 8.
