Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Third Wheel by Vinton M.

In Jeff Kinney’s realistic fiction novel, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Third Wheel” is written in a first person perspective and takes place at Greg’s school or his house in a town that’s very similar to the U.S. I could tell it is written in first person perspective because the author uses “I” and “We” so it’s saying its actually the person writing it. This book’s tone is informal and humorous. I can tell this because the author was obviously trying to make the book sound like it was a diary of a 12 year old kid so he uses terms and other things a 12 year old would say and think to give the tone of an informal diary type novel. This book is also humorous because the main character makes sarcastic jokes and thoughts made for the reader to laugh. This story starts off with Greg talking about his newborn little brother and how he changes Greg’s lifestyle and at home life. Then a little later his Uncle moves into Greg’s house and he has to adjust to that. Also at school his best friend gets on the student council. Towards the end of the movie Greg panics as he needs to find a date to the Valentine’s day dance.

The main character is Greg Heffley a 12 year old boy that is in Jr High/Middle School. He has a sarcastic humorous personality. He is relatable and likeable because he is my age and I can understand the things he experiences and thinks. The author makes Greg seem just like an average kid so that also make him very relatable and likeable. Two character traits for Greg would be selfishness and disloyalty. I find that he is selfish because throughout the story everything is about him whether it be that he is mad that his brother is interrupting his television time or if his friend gets the girl or he doesn’t. On page 174 he says “ But humor is kind of MY thing, and I wasn’t about to let Rowley steal my thunder.” So, he was mad that Rowley was doing well with a girl and making jokes and Greg didn’t like that because he’s selfish so he got mad. I also find that Greg is unloyal because in the story he wouldn’t stay loyal to his best friend Rowley. All throughout the story he talks bad about him and kind of makes fun of him and that is not something a loyal person would do. On page 216 he says “And speaking of Rowley and Abigail, I heard that the two of them are a couple now. All I can say is if that’s true, it makes rowley the worst wingman in history” In this quote Greg is talking bad about Rowley instead of being happy for him and that’s not a loyal thing to do. The theme of this book is that growing up isn’t easy and that life is challenging. Throughout the story Greg has to deal with unfortunate events and things that don’t go his way whether it’s Rowley getting the date or his little brother getting the attention. I think Greg learns that it isn’t easy growing up and that he should be more happy for other people instead of only caring about himself and what’s happening in his life.

Diary of a Wimpy kid is a series with the same main character Greg, there is movies on some of the books, those books being, D.O.A.W.K , Dog Days, Rodrick Rules and The Long Haul. The author Jeff Kinney made a lot of other Diary of The Wimpy Kid books but also other books named the Poptropica series. Those books seem to be around the same genre of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I would recommend this book to any boys who are going to school ages 10-13. I give this book a 8/10 rating because the main problem was introduced very late in the story and there wasn’t much depth to the story as a whole, I did like that I could relate to it though so that is why I rate it an 8/10.
